nature conservation in the National Park Donau-Auen
Nature conservation is of outstanding importance in the national park. Dead wood structures are left and enriched there to offer a habitat for a wide range of organisms such as birds, bats and insects. Mapping endangered species, such as the Alpenbock and the scarlet flat beetle, also support management in the park. These measures are part of extensive renaturation projects that aim to improve the quality of living space for flora and fauna.
The role of the national parks in Austria
national parks are important figureheads for nature conservation in Austria and play an essential role in the preservation of biological diversity. Austria's national parks are among the most ecologically valuable natural areas and secure natural ecosystems with special biological diversity. It should be emphasized that national parks are internationally recognized and at least 75% of their area devoted to process protection so that natural processes can be done without human intervention.
Current strategies, such as the National Park strategy "Austria 2020+", emphasize the need to allow changes in nature. Herbert Wölger, Director of the Gesäuse National Park, describes the challenge of accepting changes without value. This dynamic concept emphasizes that nature reacts to changes and finds its own solutions for occurring disorders.
