Outrage in the National Council: Wurm causes excitement

Vienna, Österreich - On April 24, 2025, the statement by the FPÖ politician Peter Wurm caused massive outrage in a meeting of the National Council. In his speech, Wurm used the controversial term "reversing", which immediately led to a heated debate among the MPs. Various political groups, including the SPÖ and the Greens, were outraged and criticized both Wurm's statement and the decision of National Council President Walter Rosenkranz not to pronounce a call for orders. Rosenkranz defended his position by explaining that the word "reversal" could also be used in a different context.

This choice of words and the subsequent interruption of the session led to increased tension in the plenary hall. Wurm himself later took the term back, but the discussion about the statement remained a hot topic. It should also be noted that technical problems led to a further interruption during the session. Microphones and the clock in the plenary hall did not work at times, and Parliament's homepage was offline for a long time. The parliamentary directorate stated that it was an internal problem and that there was no attack on the systems. The systems were gradually raised.

worm as an active politician

Peter Wurm is not only known for his controversial statements, but also for his remarkable commitment in parliament. He leads the Tyrolean MPs' ranking in 2022 and can look back on 38 plenaries and 215 parliamentary activities. This number comprises 173 parliamentary inquiries and 41 proposals. In the ninth year in a row, Wurm is considered the most active Tyrolean MP in Parliament. His party colleague Gerald Hauser took second place with 34 speeches and 136 activities, while Dr. Johannes Margreiter from Neos with 25 speeches and 36 written inquiries came in third place.

In retrospect in a look back at the challenges of 2022, Wurm expressed that topics such as the vaccination law, the Ukraine war, sanctions against Russia as well as mass immigration and inflation were important points that had to be overcome. He emphasized that the FPÖ continued to draw attention to these concern developments and bring about changes.

right -wing populist rhetoric

The use of certain linguistic means and rhetoric plays a central role in right-wing populism, as is also discussed in the Ö1 dimensions program. Questions about the role of rhetoric and the use of encoded statements by populist parties are dealt with there. Language and argumentation patterns are crucial for the success of these parties, which often operate with terms, which arouse strong emotions and operate stereotypes.

The use of language in politics, especially through right -wing populist actors, is not only a national, but also an international phenomenon. In a teaching scenario, one could deal with terms such as nationalism, anti -intellectualism and political fears that often occur in the communication of these groups.

The current events in the National Council and the resulting discussions illustrate how fragile political discourse can be and how strongly the connotations of words work. It remains to be seen which other reactions Wurm's statements will draw up and whether this will lead to further changes in the political climate.
