Electric cars: cheaper and more climate -friendly than burners!

Karlsruhe, Deutschland - A comprehensive analysis of the Fraunhofer Institute for System and Innovation Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe has shown that electric cars are not only more environmentally friendly, but also often more economical than vehicles with internal combustion engines. These results come from an evaluation of over 70 studies and were recently published. The last overview of ISI on this topic dated 2020.

The study, led by study author Martin Wietschel, emphasizes that battery technology in particular has improved significantly in recent years. These technical progress lead to electric cars in Germany with an average mileage of expression 40-50% less greenhouse gases than comparable vehicles with combustion engines. However, the investigation shows important limits: E-cars that were approved in 2020 have disadvantages with regard to water and soil effects, especially with regard to aquatic eutrophication and acidification. The study also illuminates the growing need for critical raw materials such as cobalt, nickel and lithium that are required for the production of electric vehicles. However, this need can be reduced by recycling measures.

In order to further promote electromobility, a proposal for a reform of the vehicle tax is discussed: A surcharge for cars with high CO2 emissions in the first year of admission could create an incentive for environmentally friendly alternatives.
