Donauwalzer becomes intergalactic: live event in Vienna on May 31!
Strandbar Herrmann, 1010 Wien, Österreich - On May 31, 2025, a very special event will take place in Vienna: the public viewing of the "Waltz into Space" concerts by the Vienna Symphoniker. Organized by Wient Tourism, the event begins at 8:30 p.m. in the Herrmann beach bar on the Danube Canal, where music lovers come together: to experience the Danube waltz of Johann Straus's son at 9:30 p.m. No ticket price is charged for admission so that everyone interested can take part and enjoy the atmosphere.
A highlight of the evening will be that the performance is sent to space in real time as an electromagnetic wave. This is done via the ESA Deep Space Antenna DSA 2 in Cebreros, Spain. The transmission can be followed not only in Vienna, but also in cities such as New York and Madrid as well as online via the Wientourismus website (space.wien.info) and Instagram (@vienna). A historical failure of space history is corrected: The Danube Walzer was not taken into account in 1977 on the Voyager Golden Record, which is now being made up.

For the musical performance in the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), the Viennese symphonists are on stage under the direction of chief conductor Petr Popelka. The "Waltz into Space" concert is part of the anniversary program, which celebrates the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss son in 2025. The Viennese symphonists will not only perform the Danube Waltz this year, but also stage numerous other works by Strauss as part of varied events. On New Year's Eve, the first sounds of Johann Strauss after the Pummerin's bell ring in the St. Stephen's Cathedral will be heard, in the Vienna Konzerthaus the Viennese symphonists opened the year under the direction of Petr Popelka.
In the entire Strauss year, comprehensive cooperation with various cultural institutions and projects will be expected. The highlights include a concert performance of the operetta "Carnival in Rome" and the idea of "Die Batraus" in the music theater at Vienna.
Norbert Kettner, Managing Director of Wientourism, emphasizes the importance of the event and thanks the ESA and the Viennese symphonists for their support. He invites the Viennese to experience this unique moment and celebrate the music of Strauss together.
