Diakonie warns: Stricter asylum policy endangers medical care!

Wien, Österreich - On the "World Day of the Sick", Diakonie Austria clearly expressed its concerns about the planned restrictions on health care for asylum seekers by the ÖVP and FPÖ. The impending deterioration in medical care for the 67,000 Ukraine displaced persons in Austria is particularly worrying. This includes vulnerable groups such as children, single mothers, older people with disabilities as well as cancer patients and chronically ill. According to Claudia Lui from the Ukraine consulting center of the Diakonie, there are more than three quarters of the Ukraine-refugee women and children who suffer particularly from the intended stricter asylum policy. Asylum seekers currently have access to the extensive services of the E-Card, but this could change drastically, as the Kronen Zeitung reported.

In conversation, a future restriction on emergency care for asylum seekers is in conversation, whereby funds for medical emergency care should also be deducted. According to Diakonie, this would mean that even more chronically ill children could no longer receive their vital medication, endangered cancer were also affected. Mariella Jordanova-Hudetz, head of the "Ambermed" ambulance, urgently warns that many would no longer be guaranteed the medical help they need for healing.

The Diakonie and other organizations demand clear minimum standards for accommodations to improve living conditions. Rolf Jordan of the German Association for Public and Private Welfare pointed out that many people have to stay in emergency accommodation for a long time, often for years without receiving sufficient information about their rights. Measures for prevention and better support for those affected are urgently needed, according to the central message of the specialist day and the experts present.
