Roof fire in Kötschach-Mauthen: Fire brigade saves PV system from damage!
Kötschach-Mauthen, Österreich - On May 28, 2025, a fire occurred on the roof of a hall in Kötschach-Mauthen, which affected the photovoltaic modules. The fire brigade was able to quickly locate the fire and successfully extinguish the fire. Despite the quick reaction, several PV modules were damaged, which is why they had to be removed. In order to completely delete the embers, a partial opening of the roof skin was also necessary. The use of the fire brigade led to "fire from" at 3:10 p.m.
In the cause of the fire, the police are currently investigating together with experts from the fire prevention center (BVS) of the Carinthian State Fire Brigade Association (KLFV). So far, the amount of the damage caused by property is unknown. According to reports, however, there were no injuries in the incident. The fire brigades Kötschach-Mauthen, Würmlach, Dellach in the Gailtal and Hermagor were involved in the deployment, and a total of around ten vehicles and around 50 emergency services were deployed. The Red Cross was on standby with a rescue transport car.
fires and safety risks of photovoltaic systems
The incidents on PV systems are not an isolated case. For example, photovoltaic systems reserve the dangers of fire development and electrical strokes, which has led to considerable public interest and security concerns. A research project recently examined the security risks, in particular the arc risks and fire hazards that emerge from PV systems. There was a special value on the safety of the fire brigade, which are used for building border.
In the context of this study, comprehensive guidelines for evaluating and minimizing the fire risk of PV systems were created. Meeds used for risk assessment, such as the FMEA, allowed a detailed view of all components of the PV systems. Specific recommendations for minimizing the fire risk to manufacturers, planners and builders were given. The results of these examinations are also intended to clarify the uncertainties in dealing with PV roof systems and address media misfortunes. Fraunhofer ISE reports that feedback from PV experts and insurance companies played an important role.recommendations for risk minimization
In order to further increase the safety of photovoltaic systems, the installation of lightning protection systems and fire brigade switches is strongly recommended. These measures are particularly important to minimize dangers throughout the life cycle of the systems. Although there is no legal obligation for the installation of lightning protection systems, many insurance companies require their proof of protection against damage.
- lightning protection: recommended for systems from 10 kWp, especially for exposed layers or flat roofs.
- external lightning protection: Use of lightning ladders to derive flashes into the earth.
- Inner lightning protection: combines all lines and metallic pipes with the main manual.
- Fire brigade switches: interrupt the current flow of the PV system in the event of a fire. There are fully automatic and semi -automatic variants.
In addition, a significant labeling of PV systems on the house connection box is important in order to make it easier for the fire brigade to identify the exciting components in an emergency. Fire brigade stickers, for example, are available from the Federal Association of Solarwirtschaft (BSW)
