important traffic movements in cities

But not only the Alpine regions could be affected. As the ARBÖ experts report, on the last weekend of 2024 all over Austria, there will be a huge increase in traffic. The rush to shopping centers because of the Christmas business and the departure to the ski areas, supplemented by the women's Ski World Cup at Semmering, ensure chaos on the streets. Already on Christmas Eve, a hectic picture emerged when last-minute gift buyers flooded the shopping streets.

In addition, a high volume of traffic is expected for December 27th and 28th if many gifts are exchanged or vouchers are redeemed. Problematic areas such as the Südautobahn (A2), the Southeast Tangent (A23) as well as various streets in Vienna and other large cities are particularly affected. For creations to cope with the traffic situation, dosed traffic light systems were installed at neuralgic points, while certain sections of roads are blocked for transit traffic. Preparations in the ski areas also have an effect: From the Stephanitag, main traffic routes such as the Inntal Autobahn (A12) and Tauernautobahn (A10) will be heavily frequented.

With a sophisticated traffic concept for the women's Ski World Cup, which takes place on December 28th and 29th, the authorities try to minimize the expected traffic jams. Shuttle buses are to be used to facilitate the supply of visitors. Nevertheless, considerable impairments can also be expected here, in particular around the pass height and the state road 4168, which are temporarily used as parking spaces.
