Huge modernization offensive: This is how the east of Vienna improves!

In the schedule year 2025, the partners in the Transport Association East Region (before) begin a comprehensive modernization offensive that extends over Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. The main goal of this initiative is to strengthen public transport in the Eastern region. As ots.at are planned, including construction work on the new western route in the Tullnerfeld and different measures Ostbahn, which is considered one of the highest -trained railway lines.

In addition, there are investments in train stations such as Himberg and Wulkradersdorf on the agenda. The modernization work at Himberg train station started in April 2024 and are expected to continue until the end of 2026. Due to these construction work, passengers on the Ostbahn must expect train failures, timetable changes and extended travel times. The management of the VOR asks for understanding for the inconvenience.

extensions in the S-Bahn network

A central concern of the modernization offensive is the “S-Bahn Vienna-Upgrade” project. This includes a comprehensive modernization of the S-Bahn master route and the outdoor branches. On the main route between Vienna Floridsdorf and Praterstern, there will be a block from June 28 to September 1, 2025, while a rail replacement traffic is set up with two bus lines: a yellow direct line without intermediate stops and a blue line that offers connections to Vienna Traisengasse and Vienna Handelskai.

Another important project is the introduction of a 2-lines S-Bahn ring in Vienna, which is part of the coalition agreement of the "Progress Coalition for Vienna". The feasibility study carried out by ÖBB-Infrastructure AG and other institutions has shown that the 2-lines S-Bahn ring consists of lines S45 and S80 and provides for an extension of the S45 to Praterkai. This measure is expected to be implemented from 2032, with positive long -term effects on the use of public transport, especially in districts 2, 20, 19 and 22.

modernization measures in Wiener Linien

The Viennese lines also focus on modernizations in the summer of 2025. During this period, extensive track renovations are carried out in various lines. According to a report of the Wiener Linien , the U4 between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke will be renewed. This work is necessary because the tunnel infrastructure is over 120 years old. The construction work takes place from June 28th to September 1st. During this time, the U4 will continue to run between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke as well as between Hütteldorf and Schottenring according to a detour strategy.

During the construction work, passengers can switch to tram line E4 and the redirected line D, which drives from Nussdorf to Schottenring. Track work is also planned for numerous tram lines, including those in the city center before the work begins in July.

Additional modernizations and infrastructure measures are underway to strengthen the infrastructure as a whole. The track renovations in Floridsdorf and the renewal of the course on Franz-Jonas-Platz are other important aspects of current developments in the public transport network. The Viennese lines and the ÖBB work closely together to minimize the effects for passengers and ensure a punctual range of transport.
