First hospice center in Burgenland: a ray of hope for those affected!
In a solemn act, the foundation for the first Burgenland hospice center in Oberpullendorf was laid. Social Councilor Leonhard Schneemann, together with other key figures, including Johannes Zsifkovits from Burgenland's social services, pointed out the important role that the new center in the palliative sector will take. "With an annual investment of around 900,000 euros in the accompaniment of seriously ill people, we are closing an important supply gap in Burgenland," said Schneemann. The center, which is to be opened in 2026, will have ten beds and supported by a team of 25 specially trained nurses, supplemented by experts from various disciplines such as social work and psychology. This highly qualified support ensures comprehensive care for patients and their relatives in this critical phase of life.
central location and holistic supply
The implementation of the location in Oberpullendorf was deliberately chosen because it is central and easy to reach. The hospice center will offer synergy effects in the immediate vicinity of the Oberpullendorf Clinic and the Sankt Peter's old residential and nursing home, which also increases the quality of the services offered. The existing mobile hospice and palliative teams are already doing valuable work by supporting people in their last phase of life in their own four walls. "In 2024, these teams cared for over 500 people and worked more than 7,000 hours of care," said Zsifkovits. These teams work closely with general practitioners and other inpatient facilities to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care.
This commitment to palliative care is not only a reaction to the increasing needs of the population, but also shows the use of the volunteers who provide indispensable support in addition to the professional forces. "The big heart of the Burgenlanders can be felt here very clearly", Schnannemann praised the commitment of the volunteers. With the commissioning of the new center, the hospice and palliative care in Burgenland is continuously developed and improved in order to offer people the best possible support in difficult life phases, such as burgenland.at and burgenland.orf.
