single -family house brings fresh wind

The house of Marina Rosa and Jacobus van Hoorne is not only an architectural eye -catcher, but also combines old craft with modern demands. Van Hoorne, who works as a reed tailor and roofer, brought his experience and passion into the realization of the project. He had previously completed an architectural studies and worked for a few years at the renowned research institute CERN in Switzerland.

A central obstacle during the construction phase was the use of the reed roof in the urban area. In cooperation with the fire behavior test institution in Vienna, Van Hoorne, however, was able to prove that a correctly built reed roof does not contain great fire threats and thus also ensures the safety of the adjacent buildings. These findings meant that the implementation of such roofs is now also facilitated.

The award -winning house was designed by the architect Gilbert Berthold from Zurich. The jury was so convinced of the quality of the project that it was even personally convinced of its worthiness of price on site. Through his commitment, van Hoorne makes a valuable contribution to upgrading a regional craft that is becoming increasingly important.

The client hopes that this award will be promoting further projects with traditional materials in the future and further increases interest in the reed roof. This could not only benefit the local craftsmen, but also make a contribution to the sustainable construction in the region. More details are on the project to be found.
