New deposit system 2025: This is how local suppliers are preparing in the district

From 2025, a new deposit system will be introduced throughout Austria, which also presents the local suppliers in the Neusiedl am See district. The trading entrepreneurs are already preparing intensively for this changeover, which brings numerous changes.

The basic rule of the new system stipulates that a deposit of up to three liters is paying a deposit of 25 cents each for closed beverage packaging made of plastic or metal. Milk and medical products are excluded from this regulation. "Recycling Pfand Austria" has announced that "almost the entire trade network in Austria" is now equipped with suitable withdrawal machines to facilitate the return of the empty packaging.

change in practice

Manuela Frischauf, which has been running the Nah & Frisch market in Halbturn for three years, has already completed all preparations. "The necessary empty car was purchased and 100 percent promoted," she explains. To what extent the new requirements from January 2025 will lead to additional effort, one cannot yet estimate. This will only be shown in the coming year.

It looks different with Christa Pscheiden in Nickelsdorf. She decided against a machine because these devices are too big for your business and the investment for her shortly before the pension no longer seems profitable. "Place is a real problem here," she says.

Sabine Kuni, who runs two shops in Gattendorf and Pama, has decided to return manual return to avoid space problems. A deposit machine has already been purchased in Pama, while the manual solution in Gattendorf was chosen due to the limited area. "Here in Gattendorf, the business area is simply too small for this huge machine," emphasizes Kuni. In her opinion, there will definitely be an increased effort for you and your team.

Despite the challenges, Kuni is optimistic: "We have already put one or the other stone in our way, so we can also get it out of the way," she says with confidence.

With the introduction of the new deposit system, the question of handling the return system will arise at the same time, since the deposit containers must be marked with a special Austrian Pfandlogo and barcode in order to be accepted for the deposit. The containers must also be undamaged and completely empty in order to be able to be returned without any problems.

This will very likely be more expensive to buy with an extended pawn death: if you buy a palette can with 24 pieces from 2025, for example, you will already pay six euros more at the cash register. The money returns when the cans are brought back intact. It remains to be seen whether further adjustments will be necessary.
