Border chaos for mouth and claw disease: commuters are waiting for hours!

In the past few days, border controls have led to increased traffic and traffic jams at the boundaries between Austria and its neighboring countries due to the mouth and claw disease (MKS). Especially at the larger border crossings, due to the upcoming Easter holiday start, an increase in traffic was expected. However, the Lower Austria State Police Directorate reported that the waiting times have so far remained low. The situation is still being observed closely, since no positive test results have so far been recorded in Burgenland and Lower Austria. Section trials and border controls are still underway to prevent the insertion of the disease.

The commuters from Hungary and Slovakia were faced with waiting times of up to an hour at the Burgenland border. For example, the district of Neusiedl am See reported waiting times of up to 75 minutes on the Northeast Top Mobile (A6) in Kittsee. Despite the delays, the commuters reacted largely to the situation, especially during the morning rush hour. From 9.30 a.m., however, the situation relaxed quickly, so that there were only low or no waiting times, such as reported.

Current controls and measures

To prevent the MKS, vehicles must drive at the entry points via a epidemic. This is part of the extensive controls that have been reinforced since the outbreak in Hungary and Slovakia. Since Saturday, 24 smaller border crossings in the affected federal states have also been closed. At the open transitions, the border controls are intensified in order to prevent the import of living pair shores and fresh meat products from the particularly affected countries.

like Kleine Zeitung from Monday, also 28 soldiers of the Federal Army in the Assistant Use, for the border controls in Hohenau and Berg support. Corresponding disease carpets were designed for both motor vehicle traffic and cycling and sidewalks.

Development of the situation

The traffic situation is far more dynamic at the border crossings than initially feared. Although waiting times of over an hour occurred at peak times like on Monday, they have already reduced again. At the Hungarian-Austrian border crossings, the waiting times at the height were around an hour, while about 45 minutes were expected in Nickelsdorf. Recently cherished worries about comprehensive traffic problems have not been confirmed because the police observed a relaxation of the situation.

The tests on MKS in Burgenland and Lower Austria have so far delivered negative results. This is reported by both Kleine Zeitung as well as the official bodies. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense, since 285 of around 1,100 companies have already been tested in order to recognize possible risks at an early stage. In view of the upcoming rush through the Easter holidays, further delays are expected.

The authorities advise all travelers to inform themselves about the current developments and to consider necessary precautions, while at the same time they want to promote smooth traffic as possible.
