Burgenland starts the future of rail traffic with 109 new Cityjet trains
The transport infrastructure in Burgenland faces significant change, which should not only improve the commuter experiences, but also takes into account the growing need for efficient local transport. The Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (Vor) and the ÖBB have announced that they will put a total of 109 new city jet double-decided trains into operation from December 2025. These modern trains should come up with a number of innovations that enable faster and more comfortable trips.
Thanks to a top speed of 160 km/h, the new trains are 20 km/h faster than their predecessors. These improved connection options are part of a more comprehensive project to modernize rail transport in the region, which is based on a carefully drawn up traffic concept.
extended connections and modern equipment
A central goal of the new investment is the compression of the timetable and the expansion of the route infrastructure in Burgenland and the adjacent regions. This not only means more frequent trains, but also a significant increase in seating capacity. The State Councilor Heinrich Dorner described this measure as an "important step" to improve commuter experiences, which is largely financed by the cooperation between the federal states and the federal government. "The Burgenland will benefit from significantly improved connections and modern equipment in the future," he said in relation to the new trains.
For passengers, comfort is significantly increased by modern amenities such as WLAN, sockets and an optimized interior design. In addition, accessibility is ensured, so that people with mobility restrictions can also easily travel. The new trains should increase the attractiveness of rail transport in Burgenland and at the same time manage the increase in passenger numbers.
The details of this large -scale project were recently announced as part of the transport service contract 2024 to 2033, in which the cooperation between Vor and ÖBB was also laid down. This long-term planning shows the will to sustainably improve local public transport in the East region. Karin Zipperer and Alexander Schierhuber from the pre-management emphasized: "With the new 109 Cityjet double-stocking trains, we are targeting the increasing passenger numbers." This is intended to create an extended range of mobility that meets the needs of users.
In the collective of those responsible, agreement on the need for these investments is evident: "More capacity, the most modern equipment and faster connections offer people in the Ostrregion an expanded mobility offer." This will not only shorten travel times, but also make the switch to public transport more attractive.
The new Cityjet double-decided trains from Stadler are to be put into service from December 2025 and the existing rail fleet significantly supplemented. This is considered an essential step towards more environmentally friendly and effective mobility, which could shape the region sustainably.
