New bike connection strengthens the connection of the Pöttelsdorf industrial area
Mobility in the Pöttelsdorf region is particularly popular through the new cycle path closure, which improves the connection to the industrial area. This measure should not only promote cycling traffic, but also facilitate the accessibility of the companies based there for the approximately 550 employees. The construction work was successfully carried out from June to early September 2024 and caused costs of around 150,000 euros.
After a walking and cycle path to the Arena Mattersburg was created in 2022, the new bike connection is now an important step to increase mobility in the region. The existing sidewalk was expanded together with the industrial area into a walking and bike path that now offers safer and faster connections. From the industrial area, the Arena Mattersburg is reached in just 1.7 km and can then continue to the center of Mattersburg or the train station. Particularly noteworthy is the bicycle road, which runs along the busy B50 and provides for a top speed of 30 km/h, so that cyclists can drive side by side.
Advantages for employees and regional development
Mayor Christian Kurz highlights the importance of the new bike connection for the employees in the Pöttelsdorf business park: "Mobility away from their own car is becoming increasingly important for employees." This statement illustrates the need for environmentally friendly traffic options and the promotion of cycling in the region. The new cycling infrastructure not only offers practical advantages, but could also help support the growth of local companies in the long term.
The construction was accompanied by construction director Wolfgang Heckenast, who is optimistic that the expansion of the cycle paths in the entire region is becoming increasingly important. "The country and the municipalities are pulling together for more bicycle traffic," says Heckenast. This positive development is not only limited to Pöttelsdorf, because at the same time it is also worked on other important bike compounds in Burgenland, such as Trausdorf to Eisenstadt and from Eisenhüttl to Kukmirn.
In order to make cycling tasty to the Burgenlanders, the “Burgenland cycling” participation was also launched. Since March 21, 2024, participants can collect kilometers and secure the chance of attractive prizes, including an e-bike and a wellness vacation. Christine Zopf-Renner from the Burgenland mobility center encourages all cyclists to enter their back routes by October 4th and show that every cycling is counted.
Overall, these initiatives show growing awareness of sustainable means of transport and the promotion of cycling, which should give the Pöttelsdorf region better accessibility and quality of life. Developments in this regard are promising and illustrate the commitment of both the municipal administration and the population.
