Youth unemployment in Burgenland: Alarming numbers in September 2024
In Burgenland, the labor market shows worrying developments in September 2024. The number of unemployed has increased by 7.6 percent to 7,167 people compared to the previous year. The increase in unemployment among young people who have an increase of 18.8 percent is particularly striking. This Situation is interpreted by Karin Steiner, the deputy state manager of the AMS Burgenland, as a direct consequence of the economic stagnation.
"With the training guarantee of up to 25 years, we don't let young people down in Austria," explains Steiner. The AMS offers additional professional orientation courses to meet the growing pressure on further training and the mouth of the profession. These courses are supposed to help young people who could not find a job in summer to start their job more easily.
regional differences increase the challenge
However, the situation is not the same in all regions. In the Stegersbach/Jennersdorf labor market, unemployment rose dramatically by 21.7 percent. In contrast, the situation in Mattersburg is more stable, with an increase of only 1.1 percent. These regional differences indicate that not only the economic framework, but also local factors play a role.
Another aspect that contributes to the problem is the decline in the open apprenticeships. Currently only 125 open apprenticeships are registered at AMS Burgenland, which is a decline of 16.1 percent. In contrast, there are 164 seekers of apprenticeships, which leads to an overhang of applicants. This development means that the search for a training position is an immense challenge for many young people.
A comprehensive risk is the decline in the overall open spots, which is specified at 4.0 percent. This suggests that companies are increasingly careful in their personnel decisions. Nevertheless, there are some bright spots: Tourism and trade industries were able to have a slight increase in job offers, which offers hope of stabilization.
- youth unemployment has increased dramatically: +18.8 percent compared to the previous year
- Regional differences: Stegersbach/Jennersdorf with +21.7 percent, while Mattersburg only recorded +1.1 percent
- Agency of open apprenticeships by 16.1 percent, while looking for apprenticeships by 13.9 percent
