Climate change threatens Burgenland forests: Almost 20 percent of harmful wood - Bgld. Forest day reveals drastic consequences
The Burgenland Forest Day in Bernstein was characterized by important discussions about the future of the forest in the face of climate change. With 133,000 hectares of forest, which make up a third of the country area, the forest is a key resource in the country. The consequences of climate change can already be felt: natural disasters, drought, storms and pest infestation threaten the forest. The increased presence of invasive species such as the god tree also brings additional challenges.

It has been emphasized that of the 725,000 harvest festival meters of wood in Burgenland are almost 20 percent of harmful wood. This represents an increase of 66.5 percent compared to 2022. The effects of climate change are clearly visible, and measures for the management and care of the forest are becoming increasingly important.
A special focus was on the “Klimafitter Wald” project, which is of great interest to the forest owners. Due to the targeted cooperation and planning, the forests of the Burgenland should be more resistant to the effects of climate change.
It is clear that the forest plays an essential role in Burgenland. Not only ecologically, but also economically: the forestry and wood administration generates around 7,500 jobs and contributes decisively to regional added value. Each 18th workplace in Burgenland depends on the forestry and timber industry, which underlines the importance of the sector for the regional economy.
