Elections in Romania: Who will be the new head of state?

Next Sunday there are elections in Romania, in which around 19 million citizens entitled to vote choose their new president. A total of 13 candidates for the highest office in the state compete, with the acting head of government Marcel Ciolacu of post -communist PSD the best chances. According to current surveys, Ciolacu could receive around 25 percent of the vote. However, the final decision about the new president will probably only be made in a possible runoff on December 8th.

The race for second and third place is particularly exciting. Here George Simion , the chairman of the right -wing national Aur, and Elena Lasconi , the presidential candidate of the reform -oriented USR, are in close competition. Both are around 15.5 percent of the surveys. Another competitor is Nicolae Ciuca from the Liberal Party (PNL), which is also brought into a closer selection by the opinion research institutions.
