Interreg project: Schlosspark Eisenstadt fights against climate change
In the historic castle park of Eisenstadt, an exciting new project is launched. Part of a cross-border Interreg project with Slovakia aims to strengthen the importance and maintenance of the landscape gardens in the region. There are partnerships between the castle parks of Eisenstadt and Schönbrunn as well as the gardens in Stupava and Modra to exchange experiences and find solutions for the effects of climate change.
A central goal of these initiatives is the water cycle in the castle park of Eisenstadt. It is currently being planned to pump water from the machine pond into the obelisk pond that is currently dry. Christian Widder, Managing Director of Schlosspark Knachung GmbH, explains: "If we are able to permanently ensure a water surface at the obelische pond, then in the future the next step is to simply overflow this water area again and again by watering water and thus bring the historical stream or water cycle up and running again." This measure is considered crucial to revitalize the natural resources and the ecosystem of the system.
financing and cooperation
The project has a volume of a total of 600,000 euros, 80 percent of which are provided by EU funding. Mayor Thomas Steiner from the ÖVP emphasizes the relevance of cooperation with other historical gardens. "The exchange with other historical gardens is important to preserve these green oases for the future," says Steiner. The project is said to have been carried out by 2026, whereby numerous efforts are made to keep the castle parks healthy and appealing.
With the Interreg project "Parks4future", not only the historical value of the gardens is recognized, but also a answer to the challenges of climate change. This underlines the importance of such projects for future generations. The revitalization of the water cycle in the castle park is a practical example of the exchange of knowledge and the implementation of sustainable strategies for the protection of nature in the region.
