Saint Martin: Burgenland celebrates 100 years of the state patron in Eisenstadt

The St. Martin, the patron saint of Burgenland since 1924, is celebrated on November 11th. This year the celebration in Eisenstadt traditionally started with a festive service in the cathedral, led by diocesan bishop Aegidius Zsifkovics. In his sermon, he spoke about the importance of community and solidarity, especially today. After the service, the pedestrian zone continued seamlessly with the Martinikirtag.

The Martinikirtag is not only a festival, but also a real shop window of Burgenland culture. The city and fire brigade chapel Eisenstadt opened the celebrations with a morning pint, followed by the wine baptism by the pastor Achim Bayer directly in front of the town hall. The focus of the day was on the solemn introduction of this year's city wine, which comes from the Esterhazy winery and consists of biologically produced grapes from Muskateller, Green Veltliner and Chardonnay.

pleasure and regional diversity

The iron city wine that has existed since 2016 was very popular and is created every year by a different drink. Mayor Thomas Steiner found that the initial plan to offer the wine on special occasions has now been covered, because the wine has established itself an integral part of the celebrations. The current cuvée is particularly valued for its variety of flavors, which is created by the different grape varieties.

As always, the net proceeds from the sale of the city wine flows into good purposes, with one euro per bottle being donated to the benefit in the dark to the charity. The wine is not only a pleasure, but also a contribution to the help of less happy in society.

In addition to the wine, there were also many other regional delicacies to discover at the Martinikirtag. The pedestrian zone turns into a lively farmers' market with stands that offer everything - from different types of cheese to fresh fruit and vegetables to sweet treats and various schnapps. The gastronomic offers reflect the variety of Burgenland cuisine and contribute to the festive mood.

The day was accompanied by the Winzerkapelle Kleinhöflein and the St. Georgen farmers chapel, which ensured a cheerful atmosphere. In a highlight of the day, the children had their big appearance with a lantern parade, which dipped the city center in a beautiful light and elegantly rounded off the celebrations.
