Burgenland relies in the green future: New biomass power plant opened!

Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Österreich - On April 30, 2025, the newly expanded biomass power plant in Bad Tatzmannsdorf was officially opened. This important project is a community success and was solemnly inaugurated by Mayor Stefan Laimer from Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Hans Unger from Oberschützen and representatives of regional companies and project partners. The power plant relies on the use of regional wood chips in a low -emission heat generation process and is operated with an output of 10 megawatts after existing capacities of 3 megawatts have been increased.

The biomass power plant produces around 9,000 megawatt hours of heat every year, which not only provides local businesses, but also the municipalities of Bad Tatzmannsdorf and Oberschützen as well as important local health and tourism companies. This initiative will switch to imported natural gas to a sustainable heat supply from the region. Overall, the investment in this project is over six million euros, with the aim of ensuring 100 percent energy safety and independence for Burgenland.

Burgenland as pioneers of renewable energies

Burgenland has already established itself as a pioneer in the use of renewable energy in Austria. Wind power projects in North Burgenland and numerous sustainable initiatives, such as the Okostadt Güssing, contribute significantly to this development. Smaller projects and local solutions are particularly favored in the state south to ensure regional care sustainably. One example is the bio-long heating system in Limbach, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. This cooperative organized plant now supplies 90 district heating customers and relies on wood from the region.

The opening of the biomass power station in Bad Tatzmannsdorf seamlessly fits into the strategy of reaching a balance sheet climate and energy neutrality in Burgenland by 2030. Numerous individual measures should help, among other things, the exchange of fossil heating and the district heating expansion in 14 municipalities and the state capital Eisenstadt.

greatest financing for green energy in Austria

In parallel to these developments, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed contracts for the greatest financing for green energy in Austria's history. As part of the “Tomorrow” project, the construction of solar and wind turbines should be promoted, which means that Burgenland should not only become climate-neutral, but also independent of energy by 2030. The EIB provides a total of 250 million euros, while additional funds are provided by partner banks.

As part of this ambitious plans, Burgenland Energie as a leading company in the field of wind and photovoltaics with a project pipeline of around 2,000 megawatts is to transform the region sustainably. More than 40 hybrid parks that integrate agriculture and citizen participation are intended to help reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and to generate a significant added value of around 3.6 billion euros and 12,000 new jobs.

The expansion of renewable energies is crucial for the reduction of CO2 emissions in the region, with a saving of around 7 million tons, as Burgenland Energie CEO Stephan Sharma emphasizes. The new biomass power plant in Bad Tatzmannsdorf is an important step to further promote the anchored sustainability strategy and to secure the quality of life in the region.

The entire Burgenland benefits from these initiatives, which not only support local businesses, but also contribute to identity foundation with the Bad Tatzmannsdorf brand and the entire region of Südburgenland.
