Bregenz delegation in Kyiv: Enclosed in the bunker during attack!

In the middle of an ongoing Russian attack, a six -member delegation from Bregenz experienced a dramatic week in Kiev. The delegation traveled to the Ukrainian capital during the night attacks on Friday, June 6, 2025. The group, consisting of members of the ÖVP, Greens and Neos, took part in the third international summit of cities and regions in Kiev. The chairman of the delegation, Michael Sochor, and his colleagues first visited a twin city in West Ukraine before they arrived in Kiev to take part in the important discussions on the resilience of the energy sector and the integration of Ukraine into the EU. The event was opened by President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, who honored European partners.

In the night of June 6th, the delegation was faced with the horror when air sirens were heard at 0:45 a.m. The delegation was looking for security in the air -raid shelter of a hotel, where they had to linger for several hours until the danger was over. The security measures were necessary in view of the seriousness of the Situation. Official Ukrainian sources reported at least four dead and over 20 injuries through the attacks in which a total of 452 drones and rockets were fired on Kiev and other regions. Despite the tense situation, the delegation experienced that life in Kiev continues and that people emphasize the importance of normality.

memories of the horror

During its stay, the delegation also visited places that became known in 2022 as locations of cruel war crimes by Russian troops, including Irpin and Butcha. The delegation saw mass graves and lay down candles to commemorate the victim. These experiences left a lasting impression of life in Ukraine and the need for international support that is urgently needed.

Ukraine Support Tracker reveals the difficulties to cover the high need for humanitarian and military support that has grown since the outbreak of the Russian war of aggression on February 24, 2022. Despite countless expressions of solidarity from Europe and North America, it becomes clear that only about 44% of the promised budgets were actually transferred. This illustrates a gap between the requirements of Ukraine and the support commitments of countries worldwide. The USA, the EU institutions and the United Kingdom are at the top of the donors. By August 2022, the United States had already taken over 56% of the military aid volume, which shows that financial aid is crucial for the preservation of state institutions.

return to Vorarlberg

After an impressive visit and the experiences in the air -raid shelter bunker, the delegation started the return trip to Vorarlberg. They decided to travel to Poland and on the flight to Munich with the night train. A visit to Ukraine has made a deep impression among the delegation members. The challenges in front of which the country is standing and the role of international aid have come to the fore. The stay in Kiev is viewed as a sign of solidarity and commitment to peace and stability in the region.
