Blood donations before summer: Save Live at Actions in Vienna!

Museumsquartier Wien, Österreich - on June 6, 2025, shortly before the World Blood Donation Day on June 14th, the Red Cross calls for urgency in the blood donation. Gerry Foitik, representative of the Red Cross, indicates that the need for calm blood remains constant, during the call for blood donation during the summer months. "The blood requirement does not make a vacation," he emphasizes that every adult has around five liters of blood in his body, which represents an indispensable emergency medication that cannot be artificially replaced. However, blood cannon can only be kept for 42 days, which underlines the urgency of the blood donation.

On June 9th, a large blood donation campaign will be carried out in the Museumsquartier Vienna (Arena 21). Between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers are on site to support the donors and offer them a pleasant experience. In addition to the donation, entertainment with music, vitamin mocktails, snacks and a competition is provided. Another campaign will take place on June 11th in the Marx Halle Vienna at similar times.

actions and objectives

A special focus is on the “Save the Summer” campaign, which aims to achieve a storage stand of 15,000 blood conserves. On June 14th, the World Blood Donation Day, the blood donationemobile "Karl" in front of the Westfield Donau Center from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. will also be stationed to receive further donations. The blood donation center in Vienna is open all year round, and blood donations are possible in all federal states.

Healthy people between the ages of 18 and 70 who meet certain legal requirements can donate blood. The required documents are an ID and some time. Further information on the actions can be found on www.blut.at.

volunteers in action

Volunteering plays a central role in the blood donation actions. According to the German Red Cross (DRK), over 400,000 people are volunteering nationwide, with many of them being present at blood donation dates. Your tasks include the planning, preparation and implementation of these events and you are at the side of the donors with information and support. The volunteers are not only important for the organization, but also for the accompaniment of the donors throughout the process.

In addition to donating blood, the volunteers of the DRK offer a variety of aid offers, including social work, senior care and support for accidents or in disasters. Their commitment is crucial to ensure the smooth process of blood donation actions and to welcome those willing to donate.

What happens to my blood donation?

After a blood donation has been made, the donated blood is brought to the DRK central laboratory in a chilled van. As a result, all blood donations are tested for illnesses that can be transmitted by blood, including hepatitis B and C and HIV. In the event of different findings, the donors or their family doctor will be informed immediately. After diagnostics, the blood components are divided into plasma, platelets and blood cells. This important and precise processing is essential for use in the medical field and protects the quality of the canned goods.

The interaction of donors, volunteers and medical staff not only provides a vital resource, but also raises awareness of the importance of donating blood in society. The Red Cross and the DRK therefore call up all healthy people to actively participate in the upcoming blood donation actions and thus save lives.
