Bitter election defeat: ÖVP falls into the bottomless, SPÖ remains strong!
Wien, Österreich - The Viennese ballot gymnasts were closed on April 27, 2025. Around 1.4 million voters were called to decide on the composition of the local council, state parliament and the district representatives. A total of 100 mandates were awarded, with EU citizens also being able to vote in the election of the district representatives. The polling stations closed at 5 p.m., and the first projections show significant shifts in the political relationship. For example, Kosmo that has fallen from 20.4 percent to only 11.5 percent-the worst result for the folk party in Vienna for decades.
The Greens also recorded 2.5 percentage points with 12.5 percent. In contrast, the Freedom Party (FPÖ) under Dominik Depp has made a strong jump and achieved between 20 and 23 percent. This is in accordance with the analysis of experts who attribute the ÖVP's slump to the low visibility in urban issues. Many former ÖVP voters have turned to the FPÖ, which was particularly able to score with topics such as migration and inflation. The NEOs improve by one percentage point to 8.5 percent and benefit from the weakness of the People's Party, while the team Strache remains well below the five percent hurdle with 1.5 percent.
election results and political orientation
Interestingly, the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) reaches four percent and thus scratches the five percent hurdle. As reported by OE24 , the Social Democrats only achieved 37 percent, which 40 percent mark is located. This makes the question of Ludwig’s coalition partners exciting, especially since the previous red-pink coalition (SPÖ and NEOS) no longer has a majority of mandate. There are currently discussions about possible coalitions between the SPÖ, Greens or the ÖVP, while the FPÖ will go to the opposition.Current trend forecasts show a distribution of mandate from SPÖ 40, FPÖ 25, Greens 13, ÖVP 13 and NEOS 9. The result indicates a complex political landscape in which the future course of the Vienna city government remains uncertain. Ludwig has excluded a coalition with the FPÖ, so that NEOS, Greens and ÖVP are interested in government formation.
outlook for future elections
The next Vienna elections are scheduled for 2030. In the political climate analysis of the upcoming National Council election in Austria, a survey that was carried out on April 23, 2025 shows fluctuating voter behavior among the parties. In addition, the general political mood in Austria is of great importance, such as the platform
