The way to expose the perpetrators

The crime service group of the Steinach-Wipptal police department led the investigation that took several months. Despite the increasing complexity of law enforcement, the case has so far been unsolved, since the suspects are still at large. Such fraud is a serious problem in the Austrian region, where crime according to Statista has reached a high in 2023.

around 528,000 crimes were reported in Austria throughout 2023, the highest number since 2016. Almost a third of these offenses were not available to the capital of Vienna, which illustrates the challenges for the law enforcement authorities. Especially in areas such as economic crime and cybercrime, there were significant climbs.

A look at the crime statistics in Austria

Security in Austria is influenced by a variety of factors. In 2023, for example, around 103,000 cases of economic crime were reported, which marked a continuous increase over several years. These developments also lead a light on the challenges of the police, especially in relation to foreign suspects, of which around 43 % of the suspects and convicts made up in 2022.

The police are faced with high pressure in view of these circumstances, which is perceived by the population. According to surveys, 77 % of the Austrians of the police trust, while 85 % are demanding increased combating of Islamist terror. Despite this positive perception, cases such as that of the Tyrolean fraud gang are a serious problem that focuses on the effectiveness of law enforcement.
