Barcelona plans comeback of the Formula E race on Montjuic!
Montjuïc, Barcelona, Katalonien, Spanien - On May 30, 2025, Daniel Sirera, city council in Barcelona, plans to revive the former Formula 1 course on the Circuit de Montjuic. According to Krone , it is Sirera's goal to invite Formula E in 2027 on this historical course, which was the venue for Formula 1 race from 1969 to 1975. The 3.8 -kilometer course has a moving story in which the legendary Niki Lauda races.
The Montjuic course was removed from the program over four decades ago after a tragic accident with Rolf Stommelen, in which five spectators lost their lives. On April 27, 1975, the Spanish Grand Prix took place on this course, which was won by Jochen Mass in the McLaren Ford after the race had to be canceled after only 29 laps due to the serious accident. Only half points were awarded to the top 6 finisher, since the race could not be carried out completely, which reinforced the tragic incident at that time, as GP Archive reported.
Current developments and future plans
The return of Formula 1 on the Montjuic is currently not an issue, but Sirera sees better chances in Formula E to carry out a race there. He emphasizes the importance of technology, sustainability and spectacle for the city of Barcelona and appeals to Mayor Collboni to invest in the infrastructure of the Montjuic to revive the historical racetrack.
A race on the Montjuic would not only be a homage to the history of the course, but also the only date for Formula E in Spain. Formula E, the first purely electric formula racing series in motorsport, has gained popularity since its foundation in 2014. The races mainly take place on narrow road courses in large metropolises and are aimed at a young, urban audience, such as kfz.net explained.
With the new gene3 vehicles that can achieve speeds of over 320 km/h, and improved recuperation technologies that enable drivers to regain more battery capacity during the race, an Eprix on the Montjuic could not only be a major event, but also set new impulses for Formula E.
