Bahnhofstrasse in Klagenfurt: Ideas for an attractive city gate wanted!
The Technical University of Vienna has launched an exciting project that will take place in Klagenfurt from May 5th to 11th, 2025. As part of the “Acctra” project, the Outer Bahnhofstrasse is to be redesigned. The aim is to explore the design options of this central traffic artery and to improve the quality of life in the city. Bahnhofstraße is particularly important because it is the first goal to the city center and will become more important by opening the Koralbahn at the end of 2025. A collection of ideas from users will take place on site, coupled with the presentation of two design variants. The project aims to listen to users and to involve their needs in future plans, such as Klick-kaernten.at.
As part of the test week, over 250 people are to be interviewed, including residents, users and companies. The results show that foot traffic is of great importance and an improvement in the quality of stay for foot and cycling is desired. For this purpose, design principles are presented that are based on examples such as "La Rambla" in Barcelona. There are also opportunities for trying out and discussing solutions at an information stand, which should significantly increase the participation of the population.
sustainability in focus
The “Acctra” project not only has the design of Bahnhofstrasse in mind, but also pursues a more comprehensive goal: improving sustainability, quality of life and accessibility in cities. In addition to Klagenfurt, the project is also carried out in Istanbul. The focus is on promoting alternatives to car traffic, such as walking, cycling, public transport and e-scooter. Road experiments are intended to develop new guidelines for more accessible and sustainable traffic, such as Acctra.eu describes in detail.
at a time when, according to forecasts will live up to 70 % of the world's population in cities by 2050, sustainable urban development is becoming increasingly important. Excessive traffic, air pollution and expensive living space are challenges that need to be mastered. Measures such as the creation of green spaces, the improvement of building insulation and the establishment of educational institutes play a crucial role, such as studyflix.de emphasizes.
The results of the surveys and the ideas collected during the test week are scientifically evaluated and published on the project website. Vice Mayor Ronald Rabitsch and City Councilor Max have the importance of incorporating the user needs into the planning. In addition, the project is financed by funding from the EU and the federal government, which means that it remains cost -neutral for the city.
