BABLER brings new film funding for Austrian culture into play!

Tirol, Österreich - Minister of Culture Andreas Babler is currently in an intensive “dialogue” with filmmakers and umbrella organizations to develop a new “guideline” to promote Austrian films. In particular, emphasis is placed on “selective cultural promotion”, which is considered to be identity -creating. The previous funding regime is criticized by those involved as inefficient, which prompted the minister to strive for comprehensive changes to film funding. Around 37 million euros are available this year.

The challenges in the cultural budget are not to be underestimated, according to the Babler. The federal government and countries face "major challenges" that need to be mastered in order to maintain a wide range of culture in the country. The Tyrolean governor Anton Mattle has also emphasized the need for sustainable cultural financing. In order to stimulate private investments in art and culture, tax measures are being considered.

sustainable cultural promotion

Another aspect of new cultural policy is the introduction of full -time museum coordinators to support volunteer work in museums. This is in line with a financing proposal by the Museum Association, which is also discussed. Culture officers from the countries also want to simplify the complex funding structures in order to facilitate access to funding.

The need to re-use for EU funding is also discussed. It is pointed out to the hurdles that represent the application for EU funds for cultural workers. The EU funding program "Creative Europe" could offer a solution here, it promotes the cultural and creative sector with a budget of around 2.5 billion euros from 2021 to 2027. This program consists of several action areas, including culture for cultural cooperation and media for the development and distribution of European films.

cultural statistics and their meaning

In order to better assess the economic importance of the cultural sector, cultural statistics 2022 are used. This provides comprehensive information about the cultural offer and participation in culture in Austria. It gives an overview of public cultural financing and thematic focus such as cultural heritage and media. The results of these statistics are based on data from statistics Austria and are available on their website.

A central component of cultural development is the need to ensure broad access to culture. This is underlined by the promotion of art and culture and the support of the cultural heritage. The introduction of a coordination center for memory and memorial culture and the expansion of the Vera* trust area against abuse of power, harassment and violence in art and culture should also improve the framework conditions for cultural workers.

While the dialogue between politics and the cultural workers continue, it remains to be seen how the new film funding is designed in concrete terms and which measures will ultimately lead to improve cultural financing and funding in Austria.
