Augarten bridge shines new: Now with a safe bike path for everyone!
Obere Donaustraße, 1020 Wien, Österreich - The renovation of the Augarten bridge over the Danube Canal is completed after months of work, and the bridge shines in new splendor. On July 1, 2023, the bridge for traffic is released, which is a significant improvement for residents and commuters. The bridge, which has existed since 1931 and has been a listed protection, now offers a new, wide two-direction bike path and extended sidewalks. Mobility City Councilor Ulli Sima underlines the importance of this connection between several districts and emphasizes that the renovation should guarantee security for the coming decades.
The extensive renovation began in the summer of 2022 and included not only the construction of a 3.20 m wide bike path and 2.65 m wide sidewalks, but also various adaptations to the adjacent plateau in districts 1, 2 and 9. This encloses a redesign of the intersection plateaus and the renewal of the storage space in the upper Donaustrasse Increase.
Details on the infrastructure
The entire width of the cycling and sidewalks is now 5.85 m and are structurally separated from the road, which improves safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Department head Wolfgang Strits emphasizes the need for these repair measures in order to ensure both functionality and security. In addition, new trees were planted, which not only contribute to improving the urban climate, but also upgraded the appearance of the environment.
The redesign work on the wheel lanes of the Augarten Bridge began on April 14, 2025 and are embedded in a larger project as part of the Vienna Cycle Way Offensive, which includes over 250 measures. The aim is to create more than 50 km of cycling infrastructure in Vienna until the end of the legislative period and to increase the proportion of bike use in city traffic. In 2024 the radius was already 11 % compared to 7 % in 2019.
new bike connections in the Donaustadt
In addition to the renovation work on the Augartenbrücke, the city of Vienna plans to build one of the longest pedestrian and bike connections in the Danube city, which will have a length of 700 m. This connection will not only better link existing urban development areas, but also overcome the barriers through the ÖBB-Bahntrasse and the expressway S2. City councilor Ulli Sima has announced that this new bridge will create short footpaths and a central gap in the cycle path network.
The construction of this bridge is expected to begin in mid -2026. The helping measures for accessibility include ramps, stairs and lifts, which are specially planned for barrier -free access. With these new projects, Vienna continues to become a bicycle -friendly city in which the use of bicycles is promoted as an environmentally friendly means of transport.
