Registration record for medical studies: 2025 attracts numerous applicants!
Wien, Österreich - In 2025, medical studies in Austria and Germany increasingly attract applicants. Current numbers show a gratifying increase in registrations for the medical courses in German -speaking countries. The annual application figures for medical studies in Austria achieved a stable value in 2024 with around 15,200 after the figures in previous years have decreased continuously. There is a remarkable increase in Vienna and Linz in particular: In Vienna, registrations rose from 7,384 in 2023 to 7,729 in 2024, while Linz gained registrations from 1,975 to 2,084. In Innsbruck and Graz, on the other hand, the number of applicants remained stable at 3,238 and 2,617.
With 772 study places,Vienna offers the most opportunities, followed by Innsbruck with 420, Graz with 388 and Linz with 320 places available. The quota regulations are clearly structured: 95% of the places are reserved for EU citizens and 75% of the places of human medicine are reserved for applicants with an Austrian high school certificate. In contrast, there is no quota regulation for dentistry studies, which changes the approval criteria. 85 out of 1,900 places are provided for certain study places in the public interest, with a lower number of points in the test.
application procedure and registration conditions
In order to apply for the study place, applicants must take part in an aptitude test, the results of which are crucial for the allocation of points. Without participating in this test, applicants receive zero points in the corresponding odds. Participation and timely registration are therefore of central importance. In Germany, first study applicants with a German Abitur must observe the specific application deadlines that usually end for the summer semester by January 15 and for the winter semester on July 15 at the latest. Altabiturians have a different deadline and should submit their documents by May 31st.
The Numerus Clausus (NC) for dentistry in Germany is a high hurdle for many applicants. Wartesemester has no longer play no role since a change in the approval process in 2020. A central part of the application process is the test for medical courses (TMS), which is recommended by most universities and can bring in significant points. Different universities weight high school grades and test results, which influences the determination of opportunities for applicants.
universities and their admission conditions
The requirements and requirements for approval vary greatly depending on the university location. In Germany, the study places are awarded via different procedures, including the high school best rate, the additional quota and the selection process of the universities (ADH). The high school best rate provides 30% of the places and takes place in the Abitur depending on the score. In the additional rate, 10% of the places are awarded according to aptitude tests and relevant vocational training. In addition, universities have to define at least 40% of their criteria regardless of notes, taking other factors into account.

The choice of the university can be crucial, and potential students should find out about the respective requirements and deadlines at an early stage. This year, interest in studying medicine has increased again after the decreasing figures in recent years. Last but not least, this could also be due to the increased social demand for qualified doctors.
Overall, it can be said that both the number of applicants and the structures of the admission procedure undergo a change that brings with them both opportunities and challenges for future medical students. The dynamics in the registrations clearly show that the medical and dentistry courses still have a high priority in the educational landscape.
