amoclauf in Hamburg

Another serious incident occurred on March 9, 2023 in the community center of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hamburg. In this killing run, the 35-year-old, identified as Philipp F., gave more than 100 shots, which led to a devastating result: seven dead, including a seven-month-old female fetus, and eight other injuries, four of whom are in critical condition. Philipp F. finally took his own life. The murder weapon, a Heckler & Koch P30, was legally obsessed and has been used by Philipp F. since December 12, 2022.

This self -loading gun is also used by the Bundeswehr and the police. It does not have an external security system, which makes it ready for use quickly. With a magazine of 15 cartridges, the gunman fired nine magazines. In Germany, a weapon ownership card (WBK) is required for the lawful possession of the P30. The responsible authorities, the police in Hamburg, issue this WBK, whereby the applicants must be at least 18 years old and have to prove reliability.

legal regulations and social discussions

The discussion about gun ownership is a sensitive topic in Germany that focuses on tragic events such as amotlets. After the Second World War there were different handling of the weapon topic in the former GDR and FRG. In the GDR, private firearms were almost completely banned, while in the FRG after 1945 there was a high popularity of firearms in the private sector. The regulations of the Weapons Act have been revised again and again in the years after various gaufers to tighten the controls and increase age limits for gun ownership.

A central result of this discussion was the introduction of a national weapon register in 2019 in order to better monitor the number of private firearms in Germany. Experts like Prof. Dr. Dagmar Ellerbrock is intensively devoted to research on civilian weapons cultures and the social implications of gun ownership. In order to meet the increasing demand and the associated dangers, a growing awareness of the risks of firearms has arisen, even if you have not completely lost your status as a fascinating good.

The interaction of these incidents and public reactions on it shows the complexity of the topic and the urgent need for a continuous examination of the topic of gun ownership in society.
