100 days of triple coalition: Austria's government remains under pressure!
On June 6, 2025, the Black-Red Pink Federal Government celebrates its 100-day existence. This coalition, consisting of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and the NEOS, is the first triple coalition in the second republic and competed under difficult conditions. Despite a heated election campaign and the longest government formation in the country's history, the government managed to bring peace to domestic politics. According to Vienna.at, budget renovation was implemented quickly and free of friction, but there is still potential for conflict between the coalition partners.
The ideological differences between the coalition partners are noticeable because they could only agree on a collaboration on the second attempt. This is also underlined by N-TV, which described the negotiations as the most difficult in Austria's history. Nevertheless, the federal government decided three days after the engagement measures for budget consolidation. This includes increasing bank levy, the abolition of educational leave and a rental stop in partial areas.
government program and measures
The government program was presented in parliament on Thursday morning. It comprises 211 pages and bears the title: "Do the right thing now. For Austria". It emphasizes consensus and pragmatism as the basis of the agreement, with regard to the failed negotiations between the ÖVP and FPÖ. The NEOs were able to achieve a two -thirds majority to accept the coalition pact, which was important to their consent. Nevertheless, the approval of the party committees of the ÖVP and SPÖ is still pending, but is considered less problematic.
The most important reforms include measures to ensure the financing of the labor market service (AMS) and a comprehensive reform of educational leave. In the social area, the federal government plans to introduce uniform social assistance as well as a stop of the irregular migration and new regulations for family reunification. The topics of messenger surveillance and the reforms of social assistance, which are viewed as possible foci for the future, are particularly controversial.
public perception and challenges
Despite the pragmatic approaches by Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) and Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ), the government's popularity remains stable. There is negative reporting, especially with regard to NEOS State Secretary Josef Schellhorn. At the same time, the Greens criticize the coalition and report returns in important areas such as climate protection. In a time of high debts in Austria, there is a need for saving to avoid an EU deficit procedure, which is seen as one of the great challenges for the coalition.
The upcoming reforms focus on educational measures, social assistance and energy policy. In the field of education, the government plans to expand all -day schools and kindergartens as well as the introduction of a digital educational pass. The area of care is also to be strengthened by a nationwide care and care strategy. The introduction of a public prosecutor's office is also the focus of the Reform plans of the NEOs to strengthen the judiciary.
In summary, it can be stated that the black-red-pink coalition is on a stable course despite the initial difficulties, but has to overcome several challenges in order to successfully navigate future political conflicts. The first 100 days provided some positive impulses, but the coalition is well advised to maintain dialogue and willingness to compromise among the partners to ensure long -term success. wien.at reports that savings and structural reforms remain the core issues for the coming months.Details | |
