WWF raises the alarm: species deaths in Austria accept dramatic dimensions!

Annual balance 2024 of the WWF shows a worrying image of species protection: While some animal species show hope, many other acute are threatened with extinction. As the nature conservation organization WWF emphasizes in its analysis, man -made factors such as habitat destruction, poaching and climate change are the main causes of the dramatic decline in wildlife populations worldwide. The WWF therefore calls for a comprehensive Political offensive . "Wild animals disappear at a record pace," explains Georg Scattolin, species protection expert of the WWF. The big losers include corals, borneo elephants and the Western European hedgehogs, whose population was first classified as "potentially endangered".

The current Living Planet Report Documented the dramatic decline of wildlife inventory: Populations have been in the examined populations, Birds, amphibians, reptiles and fishing were lost an average of 73 percent. This alarming trend is not only an ecological disaster, but also threatens the livelihood of billions of people. The main causes are still nature destruction, poaching, and invasive species. Scattolin warns: "Our nutritional security depends on intact ecosystems. This disappears, threatens a life -threatening crisis for humanity."

gratifying developments despite threats

Nevertheless, there are bright spots: The existence of tigers, Siam crocodiles and sea turtles has stabilized thanks to active protective measures. Particularly noteworthy is the increase in sea eagle population in Austria, which has increased to around 70 breeding pairs. These successes show that committed nature conservation measures have an effect. Below this, the WWF reports a boom in the white storks in the WWF Ou-launch reserve Marchegg, which illustrates the increasing effectiveness of the protective measures.
