Red-necked pair discovered: nature conservation project revitalizes Inn-Auen!

Aufhausener Lacke, Österreich - The discovery of a red-necker, a rare water bird, in the storage space of the Egglfing-Obernberg bundles' interior power plant is a real ray of hope for biologists. These sightings, which took place between May and July 2024 as part of the monitoring of the "Riverscape Lower Inn" life project, testify to the vital importance of intact floodplain waters for the bird species. As ÖA>, the ecologists were even able to observe a pairing of the red -hal diving, which has hoped for successful reproduction. The lively habitat, which is separated from the Inn by a guiding dam, offers ideal conditions for this type that likes to nest in nutrient -rich waters.

Renaturation for the future

But the positive developments are not only limited to the bird population. The Aufhausen varnish will also be revitalized by a large renovation project in the coming years. These breastfeeding waters have been severely affected by sediment -related deposits in recent decades. The aim of the project, which also runs under the framework of the Life project "Riverscape Lower Inn", is to convert the Aufhausen varnish into a near-natural superwater. As reported, shallow water zones and deeper areas should be created to increase biodiversity for both fish and water bird populations.
The planned construction measures are to be carried out under ecological supervision from October 2024 to March 2025. This ensures that the important habitats for fish, amphibians and insects are preserved and improved in the Innau landscape. The connection of the new waters at the Inn will be particularly crucial in order to offer fish populations access to an attractive reproductive and growth area, which is urgently required in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive.

The importance of such renaturation projects should not be underestimated. They not only contribute to the conservation of rare species and a viable ecosystem, but also to revive the biological diversity along the Inn. These measures create a valuable symbiosis between nature conservation and sustainable development, which should ensure the future of the region in the long term.
