Baby gorilla from the freight area of Turkish Airlines saved
A young gorilla that was saved from the cargo -of -career of an aircraft is currently recovering in a zoo in Istanbul, the authorities said on Sunday. Meanwhile, wildlife officers examine the opportunity to bring him back to his natural habitat.
The Gorilla Zeytin and his rescue
The five -month -old Gorilla was discovered last month in a box on a flight from the Turkish Airlines from Nigeria to Thailand. After public competition, he received the name Zeytin, which means "olive" in German. Zeytin is currently in the Polonezköy Zoo and is making progress in his recovery.
The return to home
"What we naturally want is that little Gorilla ... can continue his life in his home country," said Fahrettin Ulu, regional director for nature conservation and national parks in Istanbul, on Sunday.
"It is important that an absolutely safe environment is created in the place that it goes to, which is of the greatest importance for us."
progress in recovery
since his discovery, Zeytin has increased in weight and shows signs of recovery from his traumatic journey. "When he came first, he was very shy and always stayed where we left him," said veterinarian Gulfem Esmen. "He has now taken off this shyness. He doesn't even take care of us anymore and plays alone."
threat to the Gorilla species
Both Gorilla species-the western and eastern gorillas that live in the remote forests and mountains of Central Africa-are classified by the International Union for nature conservation.
animal trade in Istanbul
In recent years, Istanbul has developed into an important air hitchworm between the continents, which increasingly intervene in illegal animal transmissions. It was only in October that 17 young Nile crocodiles and 10 Warane were discovered in the luggage of an Egyptian passenger at Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
