Court stops Marchfeld-Schnellstraße: Environmental protection wins through traffic projects!

Marchfeld, Österreich - An unexpected bang shakes the planning for Marchfeld-Schnellstraße! The Federal Administrative Court ruled on Friday that the motorway project must not be realized in its current form. The main reason: massive environmental intolerance. According to the court, the Natura 2000 area would be significantly impaired, and the breeding ground of the protected bird Triel would have been irrevocably destroyed, as Exxpress.at

political reactions overturned

The reactions from politics are diverse. While the Greens and Environmental Organizations celebrate the decision as a success, the representatives of the ÖVP and FPÖ are disappointed and angry. Gänserndorf Mayor René Lobner described the day as "black" for the Marchfeld. "The S8 has been in the Federal Roads Act since 2006; the decision of the court has not changed anything," said Lobner. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner criticized the development as "ideologically driven" and demanded that the S1 and S8 be promoted as central projects in the upcoming government and not to let the affected population down. The State Council of Transport Udo Landbauer described the decision as a heavy slap in the face for many traffic plagued Lower Austrians.

The Federal Administrative Court also allowed a revision to the Administrative Court, which means that the legal disputes may be in the next round. The uncertainties about the motorway project and the environmental issues remain, and it will be shown which new solutions are being developed in transport policy.
