Yoon of South Korea denies arrangement for the arrest of MPs

Seoul, South Korea (Reuters) - The South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol took part in a hearing from the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, which was dedicated to his office. He denied that the military commanders instructed MPs during his failed attempt to impose war law, push from parliament.

Yoon's commitment to democracy

At the beginning of the hearing, Yoon said that he had worked with "a firm commitment to free democracy" in the public service when he was invited by the incumbent president of the constitutional court, Moon Hyung-Bae, to make his opinion.

In a naval worker suit dressed with a Burgundian red tie that previously worked as a prosecutor before he was elected president in 2022, Yoon, promised to answer all the questions that the court had.

support and allegations

yoon has been arrived as part of a separate criminal investigation. He is accused of having an uprising on what the country shocked and at the beginning of December was withdrawn from parliament for a few hours.

During the hearing that the special units used on December 3,

yoon had not been sent to parliament to switch off the legislative or prevent their measures against his project. He was aware that such action would lead to a crisis that would not be justified.

justification of the measures

"In this country, the parliament and the media are far more powerful than the president and are in a much superior position," said Yoon before the court.

His lawyers presented arguments on the defense of Yoon's war law. They claimed that he was intended to trigger an alarm because of the abuse of the opposition Democratic Party.

They argued that the actions of the opposition had paralyzed the government and pushed the democratic and constitutional order of the country to the brink of collapse.

"The decree should only determine the format of war law and was never intended to be carried out, this would still have been possible due to the conflict with higher laws," said lawyer Cha Gi-Hwan before the court.

opposition and parliamentary coordination

cha also rejected the statements of military commanders who were involved in the declaration of war law. These had explained that Yoon and his top consultants had ordered the arrest of some members of the MPs who had been politically conflicting with the president.

The opposition Democratic Party, supported by minority parties and 12 members of Yoons Volkskraft party, voted on December 14th with a two-thirds majority for the elevation of Yoons.

procedure and evidence

The constitutional court began the procedure on December 27th to have a Office application Check in which Yoon is accused of violating his constitutional obligations by the disproportionate imposition of war law.

The legal team of the parliament presented statements by military commanders and video recordings that showed military helicopters that landed on the parliament site, as well as special units that enter the main building while troops moved to the national election commission.

effects and safety precautions

One of the lawyers also criticized unfounded claims about irregularities in the election commission, which Yoon had led to justify war law.

"In the current national unrest in South Korea, the conspiracy theory of elections can destroy our community itself," said the lawyer.

The constitutional court has up to 180 days to decide whether Yoon is permanently removed from office or used again.

yoon was transported to the hearing from the Detention Center Seoul in a vehicle of the correctional service, escorted by a motorcade of the presidential security service.

He was allowed to move from the khaki -colored prison uniform that he is currently wearing.

After the hearing, Yoon attended a medical facility to receive medical help with the prior approval of the head of the Detention Center, as the Ministry of Justice announced. Further details were not announced for reasons of data protection.

YOON's decision to take part in the hearing of the ceremony is in contrast to his energetic resistance to the criminal proceedings led against him, in which he refused to participate or to participate in interrogations.

legal challenges and security situation

Yoon's attendance team rejected the allegations that he had cited an uprising, a crime in South Korea with lifelong imprisonment or even theoretically punished crime.

The security measures at the constitutional court were increased on Tuesday after a group Yoon supporters penetrated into the district court, which issued an arrest warrant to extend his detention.

dozens of police buses were lined up on both sides of the road to keep hundreds of Yoon supporters more than 100 meters away from the court.
