Syria chooses Parliament for the first time in September after Assad's deposition
Parliamentary elections will take place in Syria, as the chairman of an authority to organize the election process on Sunday told state media. Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, the chairman of the High Committee for the elections to the People's Assembly, announced that the elections will take place between September 15 and 20. These elections have been the first among the country's new authorities since the fall of the former President Bashar al-Assad during a surprising rebel attack in December.
election distribution and process
A third of the 210 seats are appointed by the interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa, while the other seats are chosen. In a recent interview with the news website EREM News, another member of the election board, Hassan al-Daghim, explained that an election college is set up in every province of Syria to determine the selected seats.
temporary constitution and political transition phase
A temporary constitution signed by al-Sharaa provides for the establishment of a People's Committee, which is intended to act as an interim parliament until a permanent constitution adopted and general elections take place. However, these processes could take years.
tensions and violence in the country
The announcement of the upcoming elections takes place at a time when the country is increasingly divided into its views about the new authorities in Damascus. Just this month broke out in the southern province of Suwayda sectarian violence that cost hundreds of lives and threatened the fragile post -war transition phase of Syria.
causes of conflicts and international reactions
The violent clashes that broke out two weeks ago were triggered by mutual kidnapping between armed Bedouin clans and fighters of the religious minority of the druzes. However, the Syrian government troops intervened, supposedly to end the fights, actually supported the clans. According to reports, government troops carried out the execution of druzen civilists and burned and looted houses.
Israel also intervened and carried out air strikes to the government troops and the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense, on the grounds that they want to defend the druzen minority.
