Attention parents: Social media as a addiction trap for children!
Stainz, Österreich - In Styria, the “Healthy Community Stainz” under the direction of Brigitte Kürschner has brought a pressing problem into focus: the influence of social media on children and adolescents. Speaker Isabella Kranacher from the Vivid department highlighted the diverse challenges during a lecture, which goes hand in hand with the omnipresent use of digital platforms. A central point of their discussion was the appeal to parents to appear as role models and consultants. She emphasized that it was important to support children to deal with social media critically and confidently, since these programs are often designed with addictive elements such as likes and gambling mechanisms that can captivate young people.
risk factors and addictive behavior
The survey results show that about a third of the young people consider themselves to be at risk of addiction and suffers from the consequences such as lack of sleep or weakness in concentration. The most popular platforms are WhatsApp (76 %), Instagram (71 %) and YouTube (70 %). A gratifying aspect: the overall use of these media is declining. Nevertheless, the development of strategies is urgently necessary to counteract the risk of addiction. In this context, experts reported that 32 percent of students and nine percent of adults in Styria are considered to be at risk of addiction in their Internet behavior, as the Vivid department determines. These alarming numbers make it clear that preventive measures are essential in order to promote healthy internet use and to recognize addictive behavior at an early stage.
To support families, Vivid has developed an action plan that includes a total of 27 recommendations for prevention to better inform and sensitize caregivers of children and adolescents. Isabella Kranacher asked parents to establish clear rules regarding media use and act as role models themselves. Compliance with these agreements is crucial in order to offer the children a safe environment in dealing with social media. It is also recommended to use external aids such as Family Link to ensure the safety of the children, as many children often welcome strict rules. In this way, the family relationship remains the best protection against the dangers of digital searches. This problem is not only considered locally, but also on other social levels, since addiction prevention on the Internet is a challenge that requires urgent attention, as is the online conference initiated by Vivid, which was aimed specifically at adults.Details | |
