Tempo 30 in the streets: security for our children and seniors!
The recently introduced amendment to the road traffic regulations in Austria is an important step for traffic safety, especially in sensitive areas such as schools and kindergartens. In addition to spital and retirement homes, a maximum speed limit of a maximum of 30 km/h is now sought in these zones in order to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. As Orf , 62 Mayor in Upper Austria have already given their approval for this regulation. Currently, however, the 30 km/h zone is only implemented in Hargelsberg and Weichstetten.
Special attention is paid to the tedious implementation process, which Mayor Peter Schobesberger explained. The mayor of Vöcklabruck speaks of a long struggle to go through the necessary legal steps and adapt the road accordingly. Walter Lazelsberger from Sankt Marien is more positive about working with the state, but emphasizes that the speed limit only applies during the opening hours of school and kindergarten. The Verkehrsclub Austria (VCÖ) supports the initiative and emphasizes that the risk of a fatal accident at 50 km/h is five times higher than at 30 km/h, which underlines the importance of this measure.
