USA block UN Resolution: Frustration over the Gaza War is growing!

Gazastreifen, Palästina - The United States blocked a resolution in the UN Security Council to calm the Gaza War with their veto. The American UN ambassador Dorothy Shea thus prevented a decision binding under international law, which was supported by all other 14 member states of the Security Council. The text introduced called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all Israeli hostages and the abolition of the restrictions on humanitarian aid for 2.1 million people in the Gaza Strip. On Wednesday, according to Palestinian information, over 40 deaths were reported by Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, including a twelve -year -old child.

In its reasoning, the United States pointed out that the resolution would strengthen Hamas and thus enable renewed attacks. They also criticized the text as dubious and shameful, especially with regard to the use by the United Nations. Instead, the USA demanded that the resolution should support the controversial Gaza Humanitrian Foundation (GHF), which, however, deals with the distribution of humanitarian aid and, according to the UN assessment, violates the standards of neutral help.

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has dramatically deteriorated during the conflict. Since the beginning of the Gaza War more than a year and a half ago, over 54,600 Palestinians have been killed by the health authority controlled by Hamas. The Israeli army continues to carry out attacks against Hamas and other terrorist organizations. In view of the critical situation, in which around 1.9 million of the 2.4 million inhabitants are inland refugees, UN General Secretary António Guterres demands a humanitarian ceasefire.

Guterres has also called for an immediate and independent examination of incidents in which, according to Hamas, people were killed by Israeli attacks during relief goods distributions. He expressed horror about the reports of Palestinians who have to risk their lives for food. The UN Secretary General made it clear that it was unacceptable not to have the support of the civilian population in such a humanitarian crisis.

The events lead to tensions between the United Nations and Israel. Oren Marmorstein, spokesman for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, criticized Guterres' statements as shame and questioned the priorities of the UN regarding the humanitarian aid for Gaza or the support of Hamas. Israel emphasizes the need to continue the war until all hostages are released and that is eliminated by Hamas. The situation is frustrating for the diplomats in the Security Council, especially in view of the dramatic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
