Sustainable rescue: How an app preserves millions of food from the bin!

The "Too Good to Go" app has experienced a remarkable climb in Austria since its introduction five years ago. The platform currently has around 2.2 million registered users and works with around 6,600 partner companies, including restaurants, bakeries and supermarkets. The principle of this app is simple: unsalable but flawless foods are packed in "surprise bags", which can acquire users at greatly reduced prices, between three and five euros. This corresponds to a saving of up to two thirds compared to the regular price. The high level of acceptance is particularly evident in Vienna: here since it was founded over four million sacks have been saved, which makes the city number one in purchase of such packages, as orf reported.

Not only environmental awareness drives the users: "In the last one to two years, we have found an increase of 20 to 30 percent among users who pay attention to the price due to inflation," said Georg Müller, director at Turgut Seco. The market for saved foods not only booms creatively, but also in times of financial challenges. Last year, over seven million food sacks were sold in Austria via the app, which makes a significant contribution to reducing food waste.
