The focus: activists demand the end of the full column floor!

Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring 3, 1010 Wien, Österreich - on December 11, 2024, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., the "Association against Animal Fabries" (VGT) plans a striking protest in front of the parliament in Vienna. Activist: Disguised inside as a politician Andreas Babler and Beate Meinl-Reisinger will hand over a pork straw to draw attention to the poor situation in pig farming. At the center of the protest movement are the practices of the full column floor, which, according to VGT, are considered cruelty to animals. Political advances of the SPÖ and Neos, which have spoken out for a mandatory straw litter, are critically questioned. The SPÖ has even brought in a constitutional action against the fully column floor to check whether it is still permitted.

demand for an end to the quality posture

The VGT has set up a huge banner with the inscription "ÖVP-animal quality: pigs on full split floors" in front of the parliament. This is intended to increase public pressure on the ÖVP, which has so far not been sufficiently against the harmful keeping conditions. The Minister of Agriculture Norbert Tettschnig is criticized because his suggestions for improvement only provide for a "full column floor" instead of tackling the problem sustainably. VGT chairman Martin Balluch urges the introduction of a straw posture that would offer the animals more comfort and is confident: "92 percent of people demand that the ÖVP finally acts in the interests of the animals and allows straw for pigs!"

Part of the protest is also an online petition against full column floors to actively integrate the population. VGT makes it clear that the time is for a decision. The pressure on those responsible is growing, in particular against the background that all pig farms have to be converted by legal requirements until June next year. Activists hope that their urgent call will trigger a rethink in politics to prevent animal suffering and improve the well -being of animals in agriculture, as meinzirk.at reported.
