Greenpeace criticized: So little is really in the pesto genovese!
Greenpeace criticized: So little is really in the pesto genovese!
In a currently carried out study, Greenpeace has subjected the selection of green pestos in supermarkets to a critical examination. The results show a worrying picture: Many products that are advertised as “genovese” do not correspond to the traditional original recipe from Genoa. So instead of the high-quality ingredients such as real pine nuts and high-quality olive oil often more cheaper substitutes Cashwkerne and vegetable oils are used. According to Gundi Schachl, the head of the Greenpeace Market Check, many products have more to do with commercial mass production than with the fascinating culinary tradition.
The classic pesto genovese, which is prepared from basil, olive oil, parmesan, garlic and salt, is often enriched with inferior ingredients. In a critical analysis it was found that the real pine nuts are also completely missing from well -known brands, including Barilla. The manufacturers thus press the quality in favor of the price, which not only affects the taste but also the authenticity of the traditional recipe. Greenpeace now calls for a clear labeling: "Genovese" on the label, should also contain only the six original ingredients be. The organic pesto of yes, of course, at Billa, is a commendable exception and corresponds to the specifications of the original.
market check and trend towards ecological agriculture
Overall, Greenpeace had a disappointing trend during this market exam. Only 20 percent of the tested pestos come from organic cultivation, while Interspar is highlighted as the winner of the test, since the organic content there is more than 35 percent. Schachl criticizes that consumers are often left unclear, since many pestos, which are marketed as “alla genovese”, remain behind the expectations in terms of pleasure and in terms of quality. There is an urgent need for transparency in food labeling so that consumers can make informed decisions and that noble traditions are not endangered by inferior productions.
