Eichwalde in water stress: toxic Pfas endanger our drinking water!

The focus of an alarming report is the dangerous chemicals PFAS, which were demonstrated nationwide both in the groundwater of Eichwalde and Switzerland. In Eichwalde, the chemical that occurs in numerous everyday products has become part of the drinking water. The Märkische Werwater and Water Purpose Association (MAWV) informed about the problem at a session. According to managing director Otto Ripplinger, the values do not yet exceed the limit values, but the danger that comes from PFAS should not be underestimated. The chemical enriches itself in the human body and can increase the risk of cancer. The exact origin was identified: it comes from an old tire plant in Berlin-Schmöckwitz, where extinguishing agents were used during a fire that contains the PFAS. In order to secure the drinking water supply, the MAWV plans investments in additional filter systems in order to remove the harmful substances from the water. Until the new filters are installed, the loaded groundwater is diverted to protect the waterworks, according to the MAWV experts, as on srf.ch is.
