Future of Styrian culture: new support contracts and big plans!
Styrian culture faces decisive changes! The new Karlheinz Kornhäusl cultural state council has sent optimistic signs for the financing of culture in Styria. In the current budget there is 78 million euros for the cultural sector, which is less than one percent of the entire state budget, as reported by ORF Styria . However, there is concern about possible financial gaps, in particular due to the impending deletion of the ORF state tax.
The government agreement of the Freedom Party and the People's Party strengthens the focus on folk culture, while at the same time the high culture of Kornhäusl is supervised. In this context, the promotion of customs and singing associations and the coming year of folk culture was mentioned. The state anthem is to be included in the state constitution, which is reported by today . In cultural funding, there will continue to be several years of support contracts and reasonable fees for artists, while the "Styria Show" is firmly planned as an important cultural project.
New advertisement of the funding contracts
Kornhäusl announced the new advertisement of several years of funding contracts for 2026 to 2028 after uncertainties were given to many cultural workers. These tenders should offer space for new projects, although financing remains a sensitive topic. "The funding is tax money that is awarded according to factual guidelines," emphasized Kornhäusl, which shows that it is committed to preserving cultural diversity.
In addition, structures are encouraged to promote the international exchange of young artists. The establishment of regional cultural threads is intended to help create synergies and to further revitalize the cultural landscape in Styria. A fundamental revision of the Cultural Promotion Act is also on the agenda to secure cultural funding for the future.
