Viez receives UNESCO award: a traditional drink!

Trier, Deutschland - An important day for the Trier region: Today UNESCO has included the Viez, a traditional cider drink, the list of intangible cultural heritage. This award takes place as part of a ceremonial ceremony in Biebrich Castle in Wiesbaden, where a delegation from the Viezbrotherhood is present.

This event is the result of an application that the Viezbrotherhood submitted in cooperation with the state government three years ago. The positive decision from the German UNESCO Commission came in March and confirmed the cultural importance and the special traditions around the Viez.

The meaning of the Viez

The Viez has developed from a simple drink of the poorer sections of the population to a cultivated national drink of the Trier over the years. This alcoholic drink is widespread throughout Moselle and Saar and is traditionally made from apples, with the process of chopping, pressing and subsequent fermentation having a long tradition.

Axel Christmann, the chairman of the Viezbrotherhood, expresses the fascination for this drink: "Viez is a very special juice, in its origin and in its manufacturing process." The official recognition by the UNESCO has already triggered a small hype because more and more tourists and visitors are curious about the Viez and want to try out their own taste.

In addition to the honor of the Viez, five other forms of cultural expression were awarded during the ceremony, including the technoculture in Berlin and the Schwalm Weißstickerei, also known as Hessenstickerei. These events illustrate how diverse and rich the cultural heritage of Germany is and underline the valuable role that such traditions play in society.
