Negotiations between the FPÖ and ÖVP: Dispute over the Ministry of the Interior is pussy!

In the current coalition negotiations between the FPÖ and the ÖVP, the situation remains tense. The FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl has made the ÖVP new proposals for distribution of department. According to an OE24 report, the ÖVP FPÖ was able to present a list that provides for the whereabouts of the controversial Ministry of the Interior at the FPÖ. At the same time, the ÖVP is asked to take over several positions that were previously located in the Chancellery, including art and culture as well as close to the EU. Kickl argues that the FPÖ must claim "core competencies" such as security and asylum. The FPÖ has also confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is included with the EU competencies, which triggers concern at the ÖVP, since a takeover by an EU-critical party raises concerns.

dispute over central departments

As can be seen from a report by ORF, there is still a power struggle for the Ministry of Interior and Finance. Both parties claim these key departments. However, the ÖVP has signaled that it is ready to make concessions for the Ministry of Finance. A possible agreement could be to share the Ministry of the Interior, whereby the FPÖ wants to keep asylum and migration management in a separate ministry. However, this legally questionable reorganization could encounter constitutional problems, as experts warn.

The negotiations not only show differences in the distribution of department, but also in central political issues. The FPÖ is perceived by opinion researchers as increasingly adamant, especially in relation to asylum issues and the possible restriction of asylum law, while the ÖVP defends itself against claims to abolish essential socio -political standards. It is evident that the nerves are tense with both parties and that a quick agreement does not seem to be in sight.
