Bronze Age secrets: Huge settlement discovered in Döbeln!

Döbeln-Gärtitz, Deutschland - Archaeological sensation in Saxony!

In Döbeln, in the district of Central Saxony, archaeologists have made a sensational discovery: an early Bronze Age settlement that is much larger than previously assumed! These exciting finds come from a time that lies about 4,000 years ago and belong to the Aunjetizer culture, which also produced the famous Himmel disc from Nebra. Excavation manager Thomas Lukas said that the new discoveries were made by an already known house at a distance of only 50 to 60 meters.

a treasure from the past

The excavations, which have been going on since 2021, have already revealed over 30,000 ceramic shards, 7,000 flint objects and numerous other artifacts. In one of the pits, the researchers even found a 40 centimeter grinding stone and large fragments of burned plaster that could come from an oven or a house. The remains of 50 houses from the Neolithic period were also exposed, which underlines the importance of this location.

But that's not all! Also a Slavic burial field from the 10th/11th Century was discovered in which an extraordinary blue shimmering clear glass bead was found with diamond -shaped decorations. This pearl is the most west of its kind and originally comes from Byzantium, today's Istanbul. Such pearls can usually only be found in Eastern Europe, which further increases the importance of this discovery.

an adventure village in danger?

The excavations take place on the site, where an adventure village and a hotel are to be built. Lukas warned that the largest Stone Age nave of the settlement was exactly at the site of the planned hotel. These archaeological finds could significantly influence the construction plans and rewrite the history of the region.
