125 years of Steirerball: A festival of costume and tradition in Vienna!

In the glamorous 125th Styrerball, which was celebrated in the Vienna Hofburg until the early morning of January 11, 2025, around 3,500 guests came together in traditional costumes to dance and celebrate. Organized by Andreas Zakostelsky, the chairman of the Styrian Association in Vienna, the event offered a colorful spectacle with an opening that included the comeback of the legendary "Stoakogler" after 14 years of break. Together with almost 30 harmonica players and the "Edlseern", these moved into the ballroom and ensured a festive start, as ORF Styria reports .

The variety of traditional costumes in Styria, the "green heart" of Austria, plays a central role in such celebrations. With around 280 different costumes, the inseparable connection to the region and its history is expressed. The Styrian costumes are not only an expression of customs, but also an integral part of everyday life. Particularly noteworthy is the Ausseer Dirndl, which is not only worn on festive occasions, but also has its place in rural parent gardens. This dirndl is characterized by its bright colors and unique patterns, and has achieved a high level of popularity in both older generations and youth, such as Styria

The traditional costumes in Styria are not rigid, but are subject to fashionable influences and regional variations. While women often fall back on blouses, aprons and skirts, men see themselves in the Styrian suit, which is known across the borders.
