Online fraud: woman loses 150,000 euros to fraudsters in the rush of love!
At the center of a dangerous fraud is a 64-year-old woman from Bad Düben who fell in love with a supposed man from the USA online. This contact kept for over five years, in which the woman's fraudster pretended to marry her. As the police report, there were repeated money claims that the woman - in good faith in love - came after and transferred thousands of euros. Overall, the damage amounts to a low six -figure amount. The Leipzig police warn of this modern fraud, also known as "Love Scamming", in which emotional bonds are exploited to obtain money or personal information from the victims.
Internet fraud with difficult consequences
Another shocking example of internet fraud occurred in Lower Austria, where a woman was also victim of a similar scam. Between 2021 and December 2024, she communicated with fraudsters via social media with fraudsters who spent Brad Pitt. These pretended to be in financial difficulties due to their divorce dispute with Angelina Jolie. The woman believed the fraud and transferred her entire savings and a loan of 150,000 euros in the form of cryptocurrencies. Police spokesman Johann Baumschlager clarified that 70 percent of the fraud cases are made online in Austria, whereby fraudsters use more and more sophisticated methods to deceive unsuspecting victims.
The police warn as a caution: "It is crucial to preserve distrust, especially if you are contacted online by unknown people," says Baumschlager. She advises not to transfer any money to strangers and immediately file a complaint as soon as you become the victim of an online fraud. In view of the increasing cases of emotional and financial fraud on the Internet, it is essential to be informed about the dangers and to recognize potential fraud in good time in order to avoid serious consequences. These alarming incidents show how important it is to be mindful when it comes to personal relationships on the net, and are exemplary for the increasing risk from online fraudsters.
